Michael Beaton

Michael joined CMC in 2012 as a Consulting Director and strategic advisor to the board. His role specialises in providing specialist IP within the areas of Derivatives contracts & documentation and Regulatory development & change.

After qualifying as a solicitor in private practice, Michael joined Barclays Capital in 2001, working first as a derivatives lawyer and then as a senior structurer within the Complex Transactions Team forming part of the Equity and Funds Structured Markets trading desk. In this role he specialised in the design and documentation of derivatives linked to mutual funds, hedge funds, equities and indices. Michael left Barclays Capital to join Derivatives Risk Solutions LLP ( in October 2010 where he has responsibility for the firm's regulatory consultancy practice. He has written widely on current regulatory issues and has appeared as a panel expert in a number of conferences and other industry events relating to recovery and resolution plans, client money and central counterparty clearing. Michael's blog can be found on this site, on the website of the forum for Regulatory Change and at He and CMC are also developing the site as a source of knowledge for practitioners with respect to the issue of CASS Resolution Pack creation and maintenance. Michael continues to hold his solicitor's practising certificate and is also a PRINCE2 qualified project manager.
